Responsibilities

The Public Works Operations and Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance of streets and storm drainage infrastructure.

 

Repairs

The Operations and Maintenance Division maintains and repairs streets, sidewalks, signs, signals, street lights, and storm drainage in the right of way. If you notice any of the following maintenance / repair issues, please report your concern to the Public Works Department. If your concern needs prompt attention, please call the Public Works Department at (253) 835-2700, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm or the after-hours call-out service at 1 (800) 400-0749 on the evenings, weekends, and holidays. 

  • Potholes (response is usually within 24 hours)
  • Hazardous road conditions
  • Downed or damaged stop or yield signs 
  • Fallen trees in the right of way 
  • Right of way vegetation control 
  • Litter control issues 
  • Sidewalk Concerns
  • Flooding
  • Pollution
  • Traffic Signal Malfunction

Snow / Ice Control

Roadways

City crews perform ice prevention/remediation and snow removal on all public roadways. Priority is given to major arterials. Residential roadways are treated once the arterials are clear.

Sidewalks – Property Owners are Responsible

Adjacent property owners are responsible for clearing adjacent sidewalks.

Landscape and Vegetation Maintenance

The city and property owners share the responsibility to maintain landscapes, trees, and vegetation within the public rights-of-way all the way to the edge of the street. Click here for more details.

Street Sweeping

The city hires a contractor to complete street sweeping. Frequency varies from monthly (arterial streets) to quarterly (residential streets). Find your Section on the map. Then look at the schedule to see when your area will be swept.

Road Stewardship: Pavement Management Program

The city’s annual overlay program is the largest investment in maintaining the overall pavement condition. The city is able to overlay around 10 lane miles per year.
