
Parks and Recreation Commission Responsibilities
The Parks and Recreation Commission plays a vital role in shaping the future of our city's parks and recreational facilities. Serving as an advisory body to the Federal Way City Council and city staff, the commission focuses on key policy matters, including park acquisition, development, and addressing major operational impacts. Through its work, the commission ensures our parks and programs continue to meet the needs of our community.
Current & Upcoming Projects and Initiatives
- Playground Equipment Replacement β Oversee upgrades and replacements in parks, including Conna, Celebration, and Heritage Woods.
- Volunteer Events β Support and promote events like Parks Appreciation Day, Serve Day, and Red, White, and Blues Festival.
- Park Master Plans β Develop comprehensive plans for Brooklake Community Center and Steel Lake Park.
- Trail Repairs β Identify and prioritize repairs for root-damaged trails.
- Federal Way Community Center Locker Room Renovations β Provide input on facility upgrades.
- Hanwoori Korean Garden β Collaborate on the creation of a Korean Garden symbolizing unity with our sister city.
- Phone in the Woods β Propose and install a therapeutic phone in parks for grieving individuals.
- Park, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Plan β Help develop the departmentβs strategic plan to guide future park improvements and grant eligibility.
