Tree Canopy in Federal Way

The City of Federal Way is creating new goals to preserve tree canopy and enhance natural resources to promote the many environmental, social, economic, and public health benefits of trees.


Tree canopy coverage is currently measured at 38% of Federal Way. These trees make up the Urban Forest, which includes all trees in single-family yards, urban parks, gardens, stream corridors, wetlands, preserved open spaces, and along streets.


Current Actions and Next Steps

The City adopted its 2024 Comprehensive Plan to establish a 20-year roadmap of how the City will plan for and accommodate growth. Within this plan, a goal was set to preserve and enhance the City’s natural resources, including urban forests and mature trees that capture and store carbon. 


An assessment of tree canopy coverage is currently underway and will help inform the development of an Urban Forestry Plan. The plan will build policy with 5-10 year canopy goals that seek to better maintain current coverage and increase canopy in overburdened communities.
