Federal Way Revised Code: Chapter 4.05
Hylebos Blueberry Farm Park is a small but deeply meaningful piece of Federal Wayβs history. For decades, community members have memories of working the land and picking berries here, making the farm a cherished local landmark.
Over time, the site became overgrown and in need of care, inspiring a collaborative effort to restore and preserve it for future generations. Through the dedication of volunteers and community partners, the farm has undergone significant restoration. Hundreds of hours have been spent removing invasive blackberry bushes, clearing rocks and old irrigation, improving soil health, installing new irrigation, and planting new blueberry bushes.
Educational efforts have also played an important role, including hands-on pruning workshops led by master gardeners Jim and Donna Cox, founders of Light of Christ Community Garden. Mason bees were introduced to support pollination, and ongoing maintenance continues to strengthen the health of the farm. As restoration work progressed, stories began to resurface from residents who once worked or picked berries at the farm, reinforcing its importance as a shared community space. While the farm remains modest in size, there is strong enthusiasm and long-term vision for continued care and future growth.
The park is also connected to the surrounding natural area by the Brooklake Connector Trail, which runs alongside the farm and offers visitors an opportunity to explore the landscape while learning about this unique site.
This restoration has been made possible through a strong partnership between the City of Federal Way Parks Department, We Love Our City, and countless volunteers, including local churches, Boy Scouts, Todd Beamer DECA students, AmeriCorps members, Starbucks volunteers, and neighboring community members.
Special recognition goes to Taylor Benson of NW Church, whose early leadership helped spark the effort to restore the farm. Hylebos Blueberry Farm Park stands today as a testament to community pride, stewardship, and the shared belief that caring for our parks helps preserve both our environment and our local history.
P.S. Hylebos Blueberry Farm Park is a place to explore, reflect, and connect with nature. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the park and trail, and when berries are available, to pick respectfully and leave plenty for others and for the continued health of the farm.
