The Federal Way Police Department is only able to process applications for WA State residents who RESIDE with the City Limits of Federal Way. If your residential address receives police services from the King County Sheriff's Office, the Federal Way Police Department is unable to process your application for a new CPL, renewed CPL, or a replacement CPL. 

If your residential address for Federal Way is not listed on your state identification, you must provide proof that you are a Federal Way resident.

    • Type your address into the search bar. The Jurisdiction must show "FEDERAL WAY"
  • If you are using a passport or other form of government identification, bring one of following documents as proof. The document MUST show a valid Federal Way address as the SERVICE address. 
    • Utility or service document   (e.g. bill, statement, hook-up order)
      • Water
      • Sewer
      • Gas
      • Electric
      • Landline phone  (cell/wireless bills are not accepted)
    • Homeowner/renter's insurance policy
    • DSHS benefits letter (e.g. medical, food)

 

RENEWING YOUR EXISTING CPL

The Department of Licensing only allows renewal applications for ar CPL within 90 days of the existing license's expiration date. You may also renew your CPL for up to 90 days AFTER its expiration for a $10 late fee.

Application forms are available at front counter of the Federal Way Police Department. If you would like to have an application form emailed to you, please send an email titled “CPL Application Form”  to federalway.cpl@federalwaywa.gov.

If your CPL has been expired for 91+ DAYS, you are no longer eligible to renew your license. Please follow the instructions for a Original/New license.

 

REPLACING A LOST, STOLEN, OR DAMAGED CPL

The Federal Way Police Department can issue a replacement license as long as the license is currently active and unexpired. Replacing a CPL does not extend the expiration date of the license. Replacement licenses are not printed at the time of payment or acceptance of application. A background check is required to verify continuing eligibility.

APPLYING FOR AN ORIGINAL CPL   

Applicants who are applying for a Concealed Pistol License for the FIRST time OR your license is past the renewal period must submit an Original Application with Fingerprints. The Federal Way Police Department processes Original Applications with Fingerprinting BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.

Currently, we have limited hours and appointments are on a first-come, first-serve basis. If there are no appointments available, please check back around the 15th of the month. If a cancellation occurs, the appointment slot will automatically reopen. Any King County resident may also apply with the King County Sheriff's Office

Applicants who have scheduled Original Appointments will be emailed the Application Form. New applicants may arrive 10-15 minutes prior to their appointment to completed the form in-person.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Am I required to replace my CPL prior to my expiration date IF: 

  • I changed my name:
    • Generally, no but some circumstances may make it beneficial. Call us or stop by for further information. 
  • I have moved to a new address:
    • No, it is not required. You are required to update your address with the Department of Licensing within 10 days. Once your CPL is issued, the Department of Licensing will track any address changes that follow. This current address information will be available to law enforcement if they need to verify the validity of your CPL. 

I have moved from another city or county in Washington State, should I schedule an appointment to replace or renew my CPL with Federal Way PD?

  • No. Appointment are required for applicants who must have fingerprints taken as part of their application. All agencies that issue CPLs within the State of Washington submit fingerprints to Washington State Patrol. If you are renewing within 90 days before/after your license's expiration date OR are requesting a replacement during your license's five year period, you should NOT schedule a fingerprinting appointment. Fingerprinting appointments are limited for many law enforcement agencies. If you are unsure, please call the police department to prevent filling an appointment slot unnecessarily. 

Where can I get more information about Concealed Pistol Licensing and gun ownership?

Is my CPL valid in other states (and vice versa)?

  • Visit the Washington State Attorney General’s website for reciprocal agreements with other states.
  • To find out if any other states honor Washington’s CPL, please check with each state you plan to visit.
  • If you live in another state, you can apply for a Washington CPL with our agency just like a local resident

What if I haven’t received my CPL?

  • It takes about 30 days to process your application. If it has been longer than that, please call us at 253-835-6700 and we will check on the status of your application

What if there’s a mistake on my CPL?

  • If there is a typo or other verifiable mistake on a CPL we issued, we will provide a replacement CPL at no cost. You may either visit the public counter during normal business hours or get a replacement mailed to you.

What if I do not pass the background check?

  • You will be notified via certified mail of the reason for denial
  • Refunds are not provided
  • If you wish, consult an attorney and/or apply for a Restoration of Firearms Rights with the King County Superior Court
