πŸ›‘οΈ Safe Return Program

For Vulnerable Adults and Children

What is Safe Return?

The Safe Return Program is a free, voluntary registry that helps first responders assist individuals who may have trouble communicating during emergencies. This program is designed for:

  • People with Autism, Down Syndrome, or developmental delays
  • Individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia
  • Adults and children with cognitive disabilities or sensory processing challenges

Our goal is to ensure a safe and swift reunion with loved ones if someone wanders, gets lost, or becomes disoriented.

Could Your Loved One Benefit?

Consider enrolling if your loved one:

βœ… Has a history of wandering
βœ… Avoids eye contact or struggles socially
βœ… Is non-verbal or has limited communication
βœ… Reacts with fight-or-flight behavior
βœ… Doesn’t respond to commands like β€œStop”
βœ… Is afraid of people in uniform
βœ… Lives with a medical or developmental condition

Even one of these indicators may be enough to qualify.

How It Works

  1. Register your loved one with the Federal Way Police Department.
  2. Information is stored securely in our police database.
  3. If the individual is found and cannot self-identify, officers can access:
    • A recent photo
    • Physical description and identifiers
    • Emergency contact and caregiver details
    • Behavioral notes, medical info, and communication tips

This helps officers respond safely and appropriately in a crisis.

What You'll Need to Provide

  • Full Name & Date of Birth
  • Recent Photo
  • Medical Conditions or Behavioral Info
  • Physical Description
  • Emergency Contact(s)
  • Known Triggers or Calming Techniques
  • Communication Preferences
